Instant is a private local search application for Mac computers that helps users find files by describing what they remember. It searches documents, notes, photos, scans, receipts, source code, and other supported files using semantic understanding instead of basic keyword matching. Users can activate it from any application with Option Space or a custom shortcut, type a natural language request, and receive relevant files with matching passages highlighted. The application supports PDF, scanned PDF, DOCX, RTF, ODT, Markdown, plain text, source code, HEIC, JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and TIFF files. It can read text from images and scanned documents without requiring an existing text layer. Instant operates fully offline, keeps files and searches on the Mac, requires no account, and does not upload content to cloud servers. The local search model uses about 1 GB of disk space. Initial indexing takes minutes for average document collections and longer for large photo libraries, while only changed files are reindexed. It requires macOS 15 or later and is optimized for Apple silicon. The product is free for individual Mac users and offers an enterprise option for private company search.
